Another Step toward Mainstreaming Nonviolence Butigan speaks at DPC Summer Dinner Lecture Series |
|
We seem to be surrounded by violence – in our culture, our politics, our entertainment – but Ken Butigan says we are also surrounded by nonviolence; we just aren't literate enough in nonviolence to see it. If we could see the trends in nonviolence in our society, we could encourage them, eventually making nonviolence "mainstream." Butigan will be the first speaker in the Dallas Peace Center's 7th Annual Summer Dinner Lecture Series titled "Moving Forward." The dinner lecture will take place on Thursday, June 9, with a reception at 6:30 p.m. and the dinner and program at 7:00 p.m. at Margeaux's Restaurant by Design, 150 Turtle Creek Blvd, #202 (facing Irving Blvd.), Dallas. Tickets are $50. Butigan has been director of Pace e Bene for 20 years. Pace e Bene, a nonprofit organization whose name means "peace and goodness" offers tools to bring the power of active, creative, nonviolent change into their constituents' lives, relationships, and workplaces, but also offer tools to put that change into practice to make a difference in the world. "We have more power than we think to make change in the face of enormous violence," said Butigan. "Things are happening that indicate that we are moving slowly toward a paradigm shift toward nonviolent solutions." Butigan is the first of three speakers who will discuss how we can move forward toward a more just and peaceful world. On July 14 Rinku Sen, director of Applied Research Center, will speak on "Why Diversity Does Not Equal Equity: Taking on Today's Racial Climate, and in August 11 Matthew Hoh, director of the Afghanistan Study Group, will talk on "A New Way Forward: Rethinking U.S. Strategy in Afghanistan & Pakistan." A series ticket for all three speakers is $130. For tickets, call 214-823-7793 or go to www.DallasPeaceCenter.org.
