The Dallas Peace Center will hold a rally outside of Sen. Kay Bailey Hurtchison's office on Friday, February 4, at noon, to illustrate the need for U.S. elected officials to show leadership in supporting pro-democracy demonstrators in Egypt. Following over a week of peaceful protests in various cities in Egypt, Egyptian pro-democracy activists, community organizers, and lay people have formed a committee to negotiate on their behalf. Their first and foremost request is the resignation of the current Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. The committee is to negotiate with the current vice president, Omar Soliman, on forming a transitional cabinet to instate the institutional changes necessary to establishing a democratic system of governance. Dallas rally participants will urge Sen. Hutchison and other politicians to:
"As we have seen over the last few days, the peaceful protestors have been met with violence by those desperate to hold on to power," said Dalia Abdelhady, Board Chair of the Dallas Peace Center.
