Well Chris, Israel is not your cuotnry. You do not live there, nor does the state policy impact on your daily life. I suggest you focus on your own home and allow Israel sort out its issues. What you really d not understand is the need for a Jewish state. Jews have not exclusively live in the US. The Arab world emptied itself of their ancient Jewish communities in a very short period. Some even sought inspiration from Nazi Germany. Ff course we already know what happened in Europe.I think it really disturbs you that Jews have a homeland. Jews can look at it as their home while residing elsewhere, which is not much different than, lets say ,the Armenian diaspora. I’m sorry this disturbs you. I am sorry you resent a little cuotnry that is far more progressive, and democratic than its neighbors. You resent a little cuotnry that exports medical advances, technology and scientific knowledge while its neighbors exports terrorism and oppresses its own citizens. Your resentment reminids me why Jews need a national homeland. Thanks you for that reminder.

Security does not come from “might makes right”. If you iittrare someone enough, they will sacrifice their life to save their feelings. “Hit a man with a stick and he will come back; hit him with justice and he will stay away” I heard that in Kenya. There is no state religion in Israel. If there were, it would have to define things like “Jew,” “Jewish,” and “Judaism,” not to mention “homeland”. “Separation of church and state” is crude analogical language I use about Israel to show the need to keep the language clear, so that people know what is being done to them in their name–in the name of the law.I know someone in Israel who would always say that Israel has muddled through up to now and it looked like it could continue to muddle through. This is a retired poly sci professor from HU who grew up in the US. I don’t want to argue with him through you, but mention that to make the point that Israel has to clean up its language so it knows what it is doing. A law that is not clear is worse than no law at all.If it does this, it will discover that the only way to ensure equal treatment of all people reasonably present under its jurisdiction is to renounce Jewish statehood. It would not be rejecting Judaism–what government has the power to legislate faith?–but it would be conceding it is not competent to safeguard Judaism except by keeping it free of government manipulation. The same would be said of its renunciation of Jewish statehood as a means of safeguarding the physical security of people officially recognized as Jews. In that specification it would be announcing the problem–is a government-approved Jew the one who needs protection from thugs? Are the two or four or six million Jews (by whose standard?) in the US just raring to go to Israel so they can be safe?Muddle is murder when it’s attached to an M-4 carbine with an Eotech holographic sight.

If it is not a pbiulc issue, then government does not belong in it–privacy is what the government calls something that is none of its business. Public=government. You want the Israeli government to be someone’s personal security blanket, so someone will not be traumatized by a risk of violent death. But you reject the likelihood of the person in Gaza being traumatized by events much more serious than a risk–by actual deaths by the hundred. This line of thought arrives at “might makes right” where your feelings are more important than other people’s. This is fine in your private life, but you can’t run a government like this. Law has to be reasonable or the state collapses. People have to be able to believe that the government is behaving reasonably–which means that a disinterested person finds it fair–”like events are treated alike”.So we arrive at the separation of church and state, the equal treatment of the laws. It is a plan for government based on the assumption that people can and will distinguish things that government can do something about from those it can’t, or how much can be done in the given case. For example, reasonable law assumes that murder is worse than theft, and theft is worse than littering. You take the case of the Pakistan blasphemy law and you wonder, how could blasphemy ever justify killing someone–whom would it hurt that much? The answer would have to be that the population could be demoralized–driven crazy–by the blasphemy so that much worse things than one person’s death by violence could result. Then someone should be allowed to ask, how do you know this–what is this demoralization, this craziness you predict–how would this work? You end up with limited government–to prevent murders, so citizens can solve social problems without fear of violence. Then to prevent theft, so people can take care of themselves, which in turn creates the time to solve social problems. Then to prevent littering, so people are not discouraged by the ugliness of the environment so as to miss some inspirations to improve their personal situations, and in turn lose out on chances to improve the lot of society at large. Could litter ever be worse than murder? In the general case, no, and law has to deal in the general case.Identity comes below littering. What can government do to help my identity? As you say, it’s none of the pbiulc’s business.

Jewish iedntity is as much a public issue as French iedntity. In other words it is not a public issue. No one has the right to question my iedntity or the iedntity of anyone else..I see where you are going here and it is a path littered with your little agenda. You mentioned Gaza without mentioning the rain of Qassams. I really hate to tell you, they my not have been as lethal but the certainly were traumatic for Sderot residents. You might want to understand that Hamas’s exclusive targets were civilian in nature.I hold Hamas exclusively responsible for the fatalities in Gaza. This is what happens you turn Gaza into an armed terror base.
