Astrology, Numerology, and Tarot – How are They Different?
Astrology, Numerology, and Tarot are all ways to get practical and spiritual guidance. Yet, how are they different? What can each of them tell you?
Read on to learn about these three forms of Divination.
Astrology tracks the movement of the planets against the backdrop of the stars. People have been looking to the heavens for guidance since prehistoric times. In Ancient times, priests and kings looked to the stars to determine the will of the gods.
All over the world throughout history, people have looked up at the sky and tracked and cataloged the movements of the stars and planets. In fact, modern astronomy owes its foundation to these ancient astrologers.
In the earliest civilizations, astrology was used to time religious festivals and to advise kings and rulers. It is uncertain exactly when people started to use astrology to cast horoscopes for individuals. The earliest horoscope that has been found dates back to the 5th Century B.C.E.
There are several different kinds of astrology that are used today, but almost all forms stem either from Ancient Babylonia as transmitted through the Greeks or from Ancient China.
The underlying philosophy behind astrology is the axiom, “As above, so below.” This discipline looks to the larger patterns and cycles as seen in the heavens as well as how we fit into these patterns.
Astrology is used for a great many things today. One common use that most people are familiar with is to learn about yourself and to make predictions about the present and future.
Many people are familiar with their zodiac signs. These come from Western Astrology, and they are actually your Sun Sign, which tells where the Sun was when you were born. An astrologer will be able to determine where all of the planets were. They can also determine other points, such as the sign rising in the East, which is known as your Ascendant, and the sign that was highest in the sky, or your Midheaven. All of these placements will be put on a map that is known as a Natal Chart. From this, they can tell many details about your personality and the pattern your life will take.
Like astrology, numerology is an Ancient discipline. It is only in Modern times that people have considered the spiritual as something that is separate from the Mundane. Numbers form the basis for everything in the Universe. As such, it is only natural that they would have deep spiritual and metaphysical properties as well.
It is axiomatic that there were numbers before there were things to be numbered.
Like astrology, there is evidence of numerology being used in many different cultures and civilizations throughout history, such as Ancient Rome, China, Greece, and Japan.
There are three main forms of numerology practiced today, but the most common form is known as the Pythagorean system.
The most common modern usage for numerology is to determine details about your personality and path in life. A numerologist will draw up a chart for you, with numbers based on different combinations of your name and birthdate.
In many ways, this overlaps with astrology, or at least what is known as natal astrology.
What is different is in the angle in which these two disciplines look at your life.
Numerology is analyzing the inner workings of the Universe that you are a part of, which are based on numbers. Astrology is reading the general harmony of the Universe, or the Music of the Spheres, and your place within it.
These two are not in conflict with each other. Indeed, there are many concepts within numerology that are used in astrology. A good metaphor would be that numerology is like looking inside a clock to see how it works and that astrology is like reading the clock to tell time.

Tarot is one of several forms of Divination that use objects. Such forms of Divination have been practiced since prehistory. Several Ancient forms of this type would be to look at the flight of birds or the pattern of the entrails of sacrificed animals.
Aside from Tarot, other modern forms of this Divination type include runes and I Ching.
In astrology and numerology, one looks at patterns that have been in place since you were born or even before you were born (in the case of astrology). Tarot and other forms of Divination of this type are looking at the moment that you ask a question.
A Tarot card reader will help you come up with a question, and then they will shuffle, or have you shuffle the cards. These cards are laid out in a spread, and from this spread, the reader will determine the answer to your question.
There are many different Tarot decks, but most of the ones used in Modern times have their origin in the Rider-Waite deck. This deck uses rich symbolism from both numerology and astrology.
While you would look to astrology or numerology to give you information about your life patterns, Tarot and similar Divination forms will answer more focused questions.
As humans, we have a measure of Free Will. Yes, there were many things about us that we came into the world with, our choices and our actions have an impact on our circumstances. Our astrology or numerology chart will tell us what was in store for us when we were born or named, but it cannot tell us the impact of our prior choices.
This is where Tarot comes in. Because it is a reading done in the moment, the Tarot reading will take into account your choices up until the point of the reading.
Tarot cards, particularly the traditional decks, such as the Rider-Waite deck are rich in spiritual and metaphysical symbolism. Because of this, they can be used for meditation and contemplation as well as Divination.
